This
small cottage is nestled in the Bride Valley, an area of
outstanding natural beauty about four miles from Chesil beach,
the longest beach in Europe. It sleeps four people,
having one double bed in the
main bedroom and two single beds in the smaller room.
All bed linen is provided, including duvets. The cottage
is decorated throughout in pine, and the kitchen is
fully equipped. There is a small stone fireplace and a
pay-phone for your convenience.
Litton
Cheney (meaning Cheney’s settlement by a running
stream), has an interesting church and is set in an area
with many attractions. West Dorset curves around Lyme
Bay from the weathered
profile of Portland Bill to the
tumbling lanes of Lyme
Regis. Behind this vast amphitheater, clay and sandstone
cliffs rise and gradually fall into gentle downlands,
hiding ancient farmsteads, sleepy villages and busy
market towns.
Here is
a place to relax and unwind, with miles of peaceful
paths
along the magnificent coastline. Aside from walking, the
area is great for cycling and fishing (especially surf
fishing for mackerel) while golfing, horse-back riding,
sailing and other sporting enthusiasts are spoiled for
choice.
The
region owes much of its charm to its villages with their
beautiful old churches, historic pubs (where some of the
best food in the
world can be found), farm shops and
local stores. The towns, too, are rich in contrast.
Dorchester, just twelve miles from the cottage, is very
much the Casterbridge of Thomas Hardy’s novels,
echoing the lives of Norman, Saxon, Roman and, at Maiden
Castle, Iron age inhabitants. Mellow stoned Sherborne is
famed for its two castles and abbey church, while Lyme
Regis at the center of a beautiful area rich in flora,
fauna and Jurassic fossils has been the setting for such
films as “The French Lieutenant’s Woman”. West Bay
sports fishing boats and fresh seafood and neighboring
Bridport a twice weekly market ideal for antique lovers. A
short drive from Litton Cheney is the village of
Abbotsbury with its Swannery and sub-tropical gardens. A
monument in honor of Capt. Hardy of Trafalgar fame is close
to Abbotsbury and well worth the visit, if only for the
fantastic views afforded the visitor. A drive along the
road to Burton Bradstock offers more views, especially
of Chesil beach and Golden Cap beyond.
To the
north of the cottage is Cerne Abbas where the Cerne
Giant holds court on an adjacent chalk hillside.
Stonehenge, in the county of Wiltshire, is a little
further north, with the cathedral city of Salisbury
close by. Back to the coast again and you will find the
resort towns of Weymouth and Bournemouth, with the
village of Corfe, with its ruined castle and the
spectacular cliffs at Durdle Dor and Lullworth Cove.
